Lawyer in Spain

For US attorneys and CPAs

Your client has a home in Spain, a Spanish bank account or a question of Spanish law. I handle the Spanish side, report to you and leave the client relationship with you.

What I handle for US firms

  • Estates with Spanish assets. The Spanish inheritance deed, tax returns and registration, or the sale of the Spanish property, alongside your administration of the US estate.
  • Affidavits and declarations of Spanish law. For probate courts, family courts and civil proceedings where Spanish law must be proved, including under Rule 44.1 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and its state equivalents.
  • Written opinions. On Spanish succession and forced heirship, property, matrimonial property regimes and the recognition of US judgments in Spain.
  • Estate planning. A Spanish will coordinated with your client’s US will or trust, or advice on how Spanish law treats a trust holding Spanish assets.
  • Family matters. Recognition of US divorce, custody and support orders in Spain, and the Spanish side of Hague Convention child abduction cases.
  • For CPAs. The Spanish legal side of a sale by a non-resident, the 3% withholding, inheritance tax filings and Spanish property held by US clients.

How we work together

We agree the scope, the fee and who is invoiced before work starts. Reports go to you, in English, at the stages we agree. I advise only on Spanish law and do not advise your client on US law or tax.

Referral fees are restricted on both sides: a US attorney may share a fee with a lawyer outside the firm only as allowed by ABA Model Rule 1.5(e) or the equivalent state rule, and the Spanish Code of Conduct for lawyers (Article 18) requires any payment for referring a client to be disclosed to that client. To keep matters simple, each of us invoices our own work, and I do not pay or accept referral fees.

Details of my professional indemnity insurance are available on request.
